Turkish wine has very long traditions and is known for using unique, local grape varieties that produce fruity white wines and full‑bodied red wines. Popular grapes include Öküzgözü, Boğazkere, and Kalecik Karası.

The most renowned wine regions are located near the Aegean Sea and Thrace, including areas such as Tekirdağ and Çanakkale.
In Turkey’s sun‑kissed hills, ancient vines whisper their stories through grapes found nowhere else, creating wines as soulful and surprising as the land itself.
Turkey has one of the largest grape collections in the world, with 800–1,200 indigenous grape varieties, depending on the source. Below are the grapes you will most often see in wineries, restaurants, and wine shops across the country.

🍇 Major Turkish White Grapes
  • Narince — Aromatic, full‑textured, floral, one of Turkey’s flagship whites.
  • Emir — Crisp, mineral, high‑altitude Cappadocia grape with great freshness.
  • Bornova Misketi — Ancient İzmir grape, intensely perfumed, lychee/orange blossom notes.
  • Vasilaki — Grown only on Bozcaada; full‑bodied, lively, slightly Chardonnay‑like.
  • Sultaniye — Turkey’s most planted grape; light, easy‑drinking, fresh.

🍷 Major Turkish Red Grapes
  • Öküzgözü — Fruity, smooth, dark‑fruited, widely planted in Eastern Anatolia.
  • Boğazkere — Powerful, tannic, deeply structured; one of Turkey’s boldest reds.
  • Kalecik Karası — Elegant, silky, Pinot‑Noir‑like; rescued from near extinction.
  • Çal Karası — Light, bright, excellent for rosé; grown in Denizli.
  • Karasakız — Delicate, perfumed Aegean red with soft red‑fruit character.
  • Kuntra — Historic Bozcaada grape, light and fruity with low acidity.
  • Karalahna — Another Bozcaada classic; possibly referenced by Homer.
  • Papazkarası — Thracian grape, juicy, fresh, cherry‑driven.

1. Trakia (Thrace)
In the small European part of Turkey, along the borders with Bulgaria and Greece, lies the Thrace region. The climate here is perfect for well‑known wine grapes such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Several of Turkey’s finest red wines are produced in this very area.
2. Marmara
The Sea of Marmara is the body of water completely enclosed between the European and Asian parts of Turkey. It connects the Black Sea in the north with the Aegean Sea in the west. The grapes Papaskarası and Adakarası, used for red wines, are common here. Some white wines are also produced around the Sea of Marmara.
3. South‑East Anatolia
Anatolia makes up most of Turkey and is often referred to as “Asia Minor.” In the southeastern part of Anatolia, the climate is hot and dry, and both white wines and robust red wines are produced. Two popular grapes grown here are Öküzgözü and Boğazkere.
4. Central Anatolia
In the high‑altitude areas of central Turkey, the white grape Emir is cultivated, as well as Kalecik Karası, which is used for red wine. The continental climate in the region is characterized by hot summers and cold winters.
5. Eastern Anatolia
In the eastern part of Anatolia lies what is considered one of the world’s oldest wine regions. According to the Old Testament, this is where Noah’s vineyards were planted. Grapes grown here include Narince, Kabarcık, and Öküzgözü.
6. Aegean Sea Region
Warm, dry summers and mild winters along the Aegean coast create perfect conditions for growing wine grapes such as Sultaniye, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Shiraz.
7. Mediterranean Region
The warm and humid Mediterranean climate is ideal for fruity white wines and light red wines. The white grapes Kabarcık and Dökülgen are grown in the Antalya and Mersin regions, along with Sergi Karası and Burdur Dimriti, both used for red wines.
